Sheyan Gunapala

As the Founder of Ascension Psychology, Sheyan is passionate about providing evidence-based, person-centred care that helps people better understand themselves and create meaningful change. His experience spans private practice, schools, and the disability sector, where he has worked extensively in therapy, psychological assessments, supervision, and social skills programs. He has a particular interest in supporting adolescents, men, South Asian communities, and neurodivergent individuals, as well as conducting comprehensive assessments for ADHD, Autism, learning disorders, intellectual disability, and giftedness.

Sheyan's work is also shaped by his own lived experience. As a Sri Lankan psychologist with ADHD, he understands the importance of feeling genuinely seen and understood in a therapeutic space. Navigating both cultural expectations and neurodivergence has given him a deep appreciation for the value of neuroaffirming, culturally responsive care, and the impact that compassionate, collaborative therapy can have on a person's life. He has a strong passion for working with trauma, addiction, performance psychology, and supporting first responders, military personnel, and new fathers. Whether helping an athlete perform under pressure, guiding someone through trauma recovery, or assisting a family in understanding an assessment outcome, his approach is grounded in curiosity, authenticity, and practical, evidence-based strategies. Drawing from EMDR, CBT, ACT, and Schema Therapy, Sheyan tailors treatment to each individual rather than expecting people to fit a particular model.

His goal in creating Ascension Psychology was simple: to build a practice where people feel safe to be themselves and supported to grow. He believes the therapeutic relationship is one of the most powerful tools for change, and it is a privilege to walk alongside people as they build resilience, deepen self-understanding, and move towards a life that feels meaningful and authentic.
